Berrisford Hill • Sporting Wildlife Artist

About Berrisford

Although brought up in Warwickshire, I would spend my school holidays on my uncle's farm in Leicestershire learning about nature and the countryside - drawing and painting at every opportunity. In these early years I wanted to train as an architect but my love of the countryside led me to take up painting. Five years training at Winchester and Southampton University, where I obtained a Degree, set me on the road to a career in art.

For some 20 years I taught art, painting and exhibiting when I could. I finally decided to take the plunge and become a full-time artist. My first exhibition as a professional painter was at the CLA Game Fair at Stowe, I had developed a particular interest in game birds and this was an obvious place to start. The modest success of this exhibition gave me the determination to continue as a sporting and wildlife painter.

I have never shot, a decision I made at the outset, believing I could observe more standing behind the guns and working my dog. I share the same excitement as the sportsman watching a grouse speeding across the moor, or a woodcock jinking out of the wood. My enthusiasm for wildlife and in particular game birds remains as strong as ever. The glint of light on a pheasant, teal bursting off water, grouse hurtling towards the butts still excite me.

Over the years my style of painting has, hopefully, developed. Although I still paint in a conventional style I often experiment with bolder techniques. I enjoy using a variety of media, the subject will decide how I approach it and what media I use.

I hope you enjoy my work.
